Computer Ethics Component

PART II: Paper Reading and In Class Presentations

ARTICLE SUMMARY GOALS:

  1. Identify issues/problems presented in the article and explain their relevance/importance to various stakeholders.
  2. Identify the proposed solutions/conclusions presented in the article; explain their relation to the issues/problems discussed and the consequences of non-action.
  3. Identify the imperatives from the ACM Code of Ethics that relate to the issues discussed in the article.
  4. Present an informed opinion on the ethical issues/solutions discussed in the article and defend the opinion using sound reasoning.

ASSIGNMENT:

Students read a given article and prepare a PowerPoint presentation summarizing the article and identifying the ethical issues involved. The presentation must include a statement of the student's personal opinion on the article.

IMPLEMENTATION

  • Each team will read a research paper from ACM digital library related to the topic of Computer Ethics
  • Each team will design 5-6 Power Point slides that will include the following:
    1. Title and Author of the Paper and the Short Summary of the Paper
    2. List of issues/problems presented in the article and explaination of their relevance/importance to various stakeholder
    3. List of the proposed solutions/conclusions presented in the article; explaination of their relation to the issues/problems discussed and the consequences of non-action.
    4. List of the imperatives from the ACM Code of Ethics that relate to the issues discussed in the article.
    5. Your personal informed opinion on the ethical issues/solutions discussed in the article. You must defend your opinion using sound reasoning.
    6. Quiz: 3-4 questions to assess understanding of your presentation by the peers

    Identifies at least one problem/issue; fails to address relevance/importance.
    4: Identifies most problems/issues discussed; clearly and thoroughly explains their relevance/importance to various stakeholders.
    3: Identifies one or two problems/issues; clearly and thoroughly explains their relevance/importance to a primary stakeholder.
    2: Identifies one or two problems/issues; explains relevance/importance to a primary stakeholder, but explanation is brief and incomplete.
    1:Identifies at least one problem/issue; fails to address relevance/importance.
    0: Fails to identify the primary problem/issue.

    Solutions proposed in the Paper: Addresses goal (2)

    4: Identifies most solutions/conclusions presented, clearly and thoroughly explains how they relate to problems/issues discussed and consequences of non-action
    3: Identifies at least one solution/conclusion and clearly and thoroughly explains how it relates to the problems/issues
    2: Identifies at least one solution/conclusion but includes only minimal explanation
    1: Identifies at least one solution/conclusion but provides no explanation
    0: Fails to discuss any solution/conclusion.

    ACM CODE OF ETHICS IMPERATIVES: Addresses goal (3)

    4:Identifies most relevant imperatives from the ACM Code of Ethics; clearly and thoroughly explains how the imperatives are violated or upheld
    3: Identifies at least two relevant imperatives; clearly and thoroughly explains how the imperatives are violated or upheld
    2: Identifies at least two relevant imperatives but includes only minimal explanation
